EU diplomat Josep Borrell believes that the main topics of the meeting of G7 foreign ministers in New York were to support Ukraine before the approach of winter and to avoid a major humanitarian crisis.
“Putin is trying to achieve through energy collapse what he cannot get on the battlefield,” he says.
Borrell noted that since the beginning of the full-scale war, the EU countries have supported Ukraine’s energy security with at least €2 billion.
According to him, the country needs to be given more air defense systems and permission to shell military targets in Russia:
“Let Ukraine hit the shooters, not just the arrows! So far, not everyone agrees with this measure. However, we have promised to support Ukraine with all possible means for as long as it takes, and the energy front will be crucial this winter.”
Thanks to repairs funded by partner countries, Ukraine aims to restore generation by 4-5 GW by winter. At the same time, the EU will increase Ukraine’s capacity to import European electricity to 2.2 GW.
