The USA is weakening control over compliance with sanctions against Russia

The Trump administration has reduced its involvement in efforts to enforce sanctions against Russia. U.S. representatives are no longer involved in several groups created to combat the circumvention of sanctions imposed on the Kremlin.

For example, the United States has been almost inactive in the working group that deals with preventing Russia’s access to parts and equipment for weapons production. Washington has also reduced its activity in the group that monitors and enforces the G7 price ceiling on Russian oil. It is not yet clear whether the United States has deliberately decided to reduce its participation or simply lacks key personnel. Some meetings have been attended by less influential officials who do not have decision-making authority.

Meanwhile, according to analysts, more than 60% of Russia’s maritime oil exports in 2024 were transported by shadow fleet tankers, including 78% of exported crude oil and 37% of oil products. Russia’s total maritime oil exports exceed €80 billion: crude oil – €57 billion and oil products – €26 billion. The shadow fleet currently includes 387 tankers.
