Performance about the war in Ukraine receives theater awards in the United States

The Hague and My Mother and the Full-Scale Invasion received awards in the United States. Their main theme is the war in Ukraine.

The productions were created by the playwright and author of both plays, Sasha Denisova.

The Hague was honored with the 2024 Elliot Norton Awards, presented by The Boston Theater Critic Association.

This is a play about Putin’s imaginary trial, told by an orphan girl from Mariupol, in whose imagination criminal accomplices of the Russian dictator appear. The play was staged at the Arlekin Players Theater in Boston. The production involved 18 actors from New York, Los Angeles and Boston.

“Of course, it’s an incredible goal to be named the best director and author of the best play in the United States on the same day. I am incredibly happy. It is important for Americans to know about the war in Ukraine through the prism of an ordinary human life destroyed by war,” director Sasha Denisova told Ukrinform.

The play has already been staged in Poland, the United States, Sofia and Toulouse. Productions in Romania and Amsterdam are currently being prepared, said Sasha Denisova.

The play My Mother and the Full-Blown Invasion won The Helen Hayes Awards for the best play of the year in Washington, DC. It is the story of the playwright Olga’s mother. The play was staged by two of the largest theaters in the United States – Woolly Mammoth Theater and The Wilma Theater.

The set designers also won both awards.
